DECODED LAYERS1 DOCUMENT LAYER
IATA / 2 CHARBA

Marketing designator on a flight number.

ICAO / 3 LETTERBAW

Operational designator, commonly paired with a callsign.

TICKET / 3 DIGIT125

Validating carrier’s passenger ticket stock prefix.

AWB / 3 DIGIT020

HOW THE ENGINE THINKS

Identify the document layer first.

  1. A

    Flight designator

A two-character IATA designator before a flight number usually identifies the marketing carrier shown on the itinerary.

  2. B

    Operational identifier

A three-letter ICAO designator and callsign belong to operational communication; they are not a fare or ticket number.

  3. C

    Document prefix

The first three digits of a 13-digit passenger ticket identify ticket stock. A cargo AWB can use a different three-digit code for a related cargo carrier.
