HOW THE ENGINE THINKS

Identify the document layer first.

  1. A

    Flight designator

A two-character IATA designator before a flight number usually identifies the marketing carrier shown on the itinerary.

  2. B

    Operational identifier

A three-letter ICAO designator belongs to operational communication; it is not a fare or ticket number.

  3. C

    Document prefix

The first three digits of a passenger ticket identify ticket stock. The same accounting code can also appear as an airline prefix in cargo context, so document length matters.
